And flurona is not a distinct disease but refers to when a person has been infected with both viruses. Flurona instances have been detected in countries including the United States, Israel, Brazil, the Philippines and Hungary, some even before the term was coined.

Instances of the co-infection were reported in the United States almost two years ago, according to a report from the Atlantic. In February 2020, a man entered a New York hospital with a severe cough and fever. At the time, the city had not officially reported any cases of the coronavirus. The patient tested positive for influenza and was then tested for the coronavirus. Weeks later, results confirmed that he, along with three family members, had contracted both viruses.

As Covid-19 cases climb across the U.S., President Biden and his administration are preparing Americans to accept the virus as a part of daily life, in a break from a year ago when he took office with a pledge to rein in the pandemic and months later said the nation was “closer than ever to declaring our independence from a deadly virus.”

Are cases of fluorine new?

After two young pregnant women tested positive for both the coronavirus and influenza in Israel, many local and global media outlets dubbed it “flurona” in headlines. The Sun, a British tabloid, swiftly branded the co-infection “double trouble.”

Where has flurona been reported?

There have been other recent occurrences in the United States. A Houston teenager spent Christmas Day isolating in his bedroom after contracting the coronavirus and the flu at the same time. Alec Zierlein, who had been vaccinated against the coronavirus but not the flu, was also tested for strep throat, but results confirmed he had only the former two infections, which he described as being “like a mild cold.” After his diagnosis, Zierlein told ABC News that he was not aware the coronavirus and the flu could stack “up on one another” and that he would, in the future, get a flu shot as a precaution.

The recalibration of Mr. Biden’s message comes as the country braces for another round of disruptions wrought by the pandemic. A growing number of schools temporarily have returned to virtual instruction and many businesses are strained by staffing shortages, in both cases due to infections triggered by the highly transmissible Omicron variant. Nearly 1,700 U.S. flights were canceled Wednesday, the 11th straight day of more than 1,000 cancellations, and many states warned that ongoing testing shortages will make it harder to return people to work and school.

Mr. Biden and his top aides have sought to cut through the disorder, even as the surge in cases has left many Americans confused by evolving state and local requirements for masks and for schools. White House officials have dismissed the need for lockdowns and urged schools to remain open.

The administration has sought to convey in appearances by the president and briefings with top officials that many Americans will be infected with Covid-19, but that those who are vaccinated have no reason to panic. “You can control how big an impact Omicron is going to have on your health,” Mr. Biden said. “We’re seeing Covid-19 cases among [the] vaccinated in workplaces across America, including here at the White House. But if you’re vaccinated and boosted, you are highly protected.”

Children in more than one hospital in South Florida have tested positive for both infections, ABC reported Wednesday. Dr. Juan Dumois, a pediatric infectious diseases physician at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital said that the presence of multiple diseases in young people is something he has seen before. “In rare occasions, I’ve seen five different viruses detected in the same child. Usually, a kid who was in daycare,” he said, urging parents to vaccinate their children.

A health official in the Philippines has also said that such co-infections are not unusual. Edsel Salvana, a member of a technical advisory group to the national health department, said the country’s first covid-related death stemmed from a joint case in early 2020.Salvana told reporters that the early pandemic patient, a Chinese national, had covid-19 and influenza B, as well as streptococcus pneumonia, according to local outlet ABS-CBN.

Some of the administration’s efforts, such as new isolation guidelines for people who test positive, have led to fresh uncertainty, and a recent poll found that 55% of Americans disapprove of Mr. Biden’s handling of the pandemic.

Vish Viswanath, a professor of health communication at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said the Biden administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention need to give more context to the public when issuing recommendations. He said many Covid-19 recommendations and guidelines have been confusing to people because the administration hasn’t sufficiently explained its reasoning up front.

“You have to give credit to the American public,” he said. “They can appreciate that science and evidence is changing.”

The seven-day average of Covid-19 cases in the U.S. rose to roughly 491,700 cases a day, an increase of about 98% from the previous week, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday.

The White House has also taken heat for shortages in rapid tests as case counts rise. Mr. Biden and his aides have pointed to steps the administration is taking to increase the availability of rapid, at-home tests, and defended their approach to updating pandemic-era guidelines.

“We are not driving our decision making on how we’re addressing the pandemic through messaging, or through political concerns,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said. “We’re driving it by what the CDC and the medical doctors and the experts there convey.”

For much of his first year in office, Mr. Biden put the federal government at the center of pandemic response—from increasing vaccinations to scaling testing capacity. He publicly battled with Republican governors who defied mask mandates and other pandemic restrictions, and defended teachers unions as many K-12 schools remained closed in the first half of last year.

Mr. Biden has continued to offer federal support to states grappling with the Omicron variant’s impact, deploying the Federal Emergency and Management Agency to assist hospital systems in hard-hit areas. But he has deferred to state and local officials on setting pandemic policies on masks and schools. His administration also has put out a series of vaccination requirements for workers, some of which were delayed by court battles. Mr. Biden has continued to promote those requirements but focused more recently on the dangers for unvaccinated people.

Top aides to Mr. Biden argue the pandemic is in a different phase than a year ago, with more than 200 million people in the U.S. now fully vaccinated and nearly 72 million booster shots administered. But they are also urging people to stay vigilant and get vaccinated.

Mr. Biden’s top health advisers have also said the virus is unlikely to be eradicated anytime soon and placed a greater emphasis on preventing further disruptions to the economy and society. The White House stressed multiple times this week that K-12 students should remain in classrooms.

“Parents want schools open and experts are clear that in-person learning is best for kids’ physical and mental health and further education,” White House Covid-19 coordinator Jeff Zients said. “And the president couldn’t be clearer: Schools in this country should remain open.”

The CDC last week overhauled its guidelines for people who test positive for Covid-19, cutting the number of days that they recommend people isolate after being infected to five days from 10—if they haven’t had a fever in 24 hours without using medication and their other symptoms have improved.

The guidance change received criticism from some public health experts, who said that ending isolation around day five without a negative Covid-19 test could further the coronavirus’s spread, since some people could still be infectious at that point.

The agency updated its recommendations Tuesday, saying that an infected person who wants to get tested should use an antigen test toward the end of their five-day isolation period. If the person tests positive, they should continue to isolate until day 10, and if they test negative, they can end isolation but should continue wearing a mask around others for five more days. The agency stopped short of saying that people should get a rapid test before going back to work or resuming social activities.

The administration has stepped up its communications around the pandemic through weekly briefings between Mr. Biden and his health team, during which the president often addresses the public, and by increasing the number of briefings held by the White House Covid-19 response team. Anthony Fauci, Mr. Biden’s chief medical adviser, remains a fixture on national television and often uses public appearances to highlight how the pandemic has evolved.

Dr. Fauci said Wednesday that preliminary data showed the Omicron variant is less severe than previous strains. But he said the sheer volume of cases would likely overwhelm hospital systems once more.

“The big caveat is we should not be complacent,” Dr. Fauci said. “So don’t take this as a signal that we can pull back from the recommendations.”

New year, new coronavirus term?

Many people around the world kicked off 2022 by searching for more information about “flurona,” after Israel reported that two young pregnant women had tested positive for both the coronavirus and the flu.

Doctors have long been concerned about the potential impact of a “twindemic” — with influenza cases rising as covid-19 cases threaten to overwhelm hospitals — and called on people to get flu shots and coronavirus vaccinations. On the other hand, “flurona” refers to when one person has both respiratory infections at the same time — which health officials say is a possibility as cases of the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus surge this winter across the world.

We’re tracking perfect brackets this year in the men’s and women’s tournaments. Last year, no one made it past the wild first round in the major online games: Bracket Challenge Game, ESPN, CBS, Yahoo and Sports Illustrated.

No. 15 Oral Roberts’ 75-72 overtime win against No. 2 Ohio State took BCG from 33.7 percent of perfect brackets to less than 1 percent. There were still more than 100,000 brackets nationally.
Later, No. 12 Oregon State’s 70-56 upset of No. 5 Tennessee took the total to around 20,000 perfect brackets.
In the third stunner, No. 13 North Texas shocked No. 4 Purdue in overtime, 78-69. That brought the world to a little over 1,000 perfect brackets.

Further wins by No. 10 Rutgers and No. 11 Syracuse helped bring the total number to only 121. That’s right — only 121 perfect brackets after just 16 games.

Look I think what Boris Johnson has done is perfectly correct. That’s what the United States should be doing. [Queen Elizabeth] likely picked up omicron from her son because it’s extremely contagious. She did what she had to do, she’s triple vaccinated, and her symptoms are mild. You see that the level of positive cases in the community is extremely low and almost gone. We have to scale back our mitigation efforts. We can’t live with masks and mandates forever.

The new vaccine had an efficacy of 75 percent against moderate-to-severe disease. It showed 58 percent efficacy against symptomatic disease in its Phase 3 clinical trial. Although that number is lower than was observed for the mRNA vaccines made by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna in their initial trials, it is “in line with expected vaccine effectiveness in today’s environment dominated by variants of concern,” Sanofi and GSK said in a statement. The number of infections observed in the trial was small, however, and the efficacy may have been lower in a bigger trial.

Used as a booster dose after one of the other available coronavirus vaccines, the Sanofi-GSK shot increased antibody levels by 18- to 30-fold. The companies intend to submit the vaccine for authorization to regulatory authorities in the United States and Europe, they said on Wednesday.

Sanofi and GSK were expected to seek authorization for their vaccine last year, but shelved those plans after clinical trials showed disappointing results in older adults. They then developed a stronger version of the vaccine and tested it in new trials.

In laboratory studies, two doses of the Sanofi-GSK vaccine stimulated the production of more neutralizing antibodies than an approved mRNA vaccine, according to the companies. The data have not yet been published. The vaccine was safe and well-tolerated by adults of all ages, the companies said.

The best target for Covid vaccines is a protein called spike that covers the surface of the virus like a crown. While the mRNA vaccines contain the genetic instructions for making the protein, the Sanofi-GSK vaccine uses a slightly modified version of the protein itself to stimulate an immune response.

This is a commonly used approach for vaccines, and so may convince some people who have been hesitant to adopt the newer mRNA technology. Protein-based vaccines are also relatively inexpensive to manufacture and may not require the ultracold storage needed for the mRNA vaccines. Those features make them more likely candidates for rollout in African nations where vaccine coverage is still very low.

The World Health Organization has confirmed that the new variant, dubbed Deltacron — a combination of Delta and Omicron — has been detected in the France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

“The hybrid genome harbors signature mutations of the two lineages,” said IHU Méditerranée Infection’s Philippe Colson in a study published Tuesday.

While evidence of the new variant has been observed, cases are few. According to Reuters, researchers have identified 17 confirmed instances in both Europe and the United States.

The IHU study also noted that more cases would need to emerge for researchers to be able to effectively detect the severity of the variant.

In a Wednesday media briefing, WHO COVID-19 technical lead Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove said of Deltacron, “We have not seen any change in the epidemiology with this recombinant. We haven’t seen any change in severity. But there are many studies that are underway.”

She also confirmed the detection of the Deltacron variant, but noted that “there are very low levels of this detection.”

On a grander scale, however, Kerkhove said, “Unfortunately this virus will take opportunities to continue to spread.”

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus similarly stressed during the briefing, “The virus continues to evolve. And we continue to face major obstacles in distributing vaccines, tests and treatments everywhere they’re needed.”
Meanwhile, researchers at Helix, a lab headquartered in San Mateo, California, found more than 20 positive COVID-19 cases containing material from both Delta and Omicron in samples tested from Nov. 22, 2021, to Feb. 13, 2022, USA Today reported Thursday.

However, “The fact that there is not that much of it, that even the two cases we saw were different, suggests that it’s probably not going to elevate to a variant of concern level,” Helix Chief Science Office William Lee told the outlet, of the two cases they found that specifically contained a combination of genetic material from Delta and Omicron.

As for whether people “need to be concerned,” Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health epidemiologist William Hanage told USA Today no, since Deltacron is “not causing lots of cases.”

“It’s only a variant if it produces a large number of cases,” Hanage said.
